Today’s Wellness Wednesday focus: Getting that chocolate fix.
Sometimes, you just really want something sweet. If that craving for chocolate or candy or cake is getting overwhelming, there are some healthier options to reach for. Denying yourself completely can lead to binging later, so we recommend satiating your craving with a little bit of something with extra benefits (think antioxidants in dark chocolate). Just make sure you take time to enjoy it, five minutes really tasting a treat can go a long way to satiating your craving.
What to reach for instead of a Snickers bar:
- A (small) handful of dark chocolate covered almonds. Dark chocolate is full of iron, magnesium, and antioxidants, while almonds are full of healthy fats, protein, and vitamin E. Fuel your body with this sweet, but power-packed snack, and sail through your afternoon with a smile. Check out Sally’s for a recipe.
- Frozen blueberries are a great snack for a hot afternoon. Freezing the fruit makes them taste sweeter and gives you the illusion of eating a Popsicle. Blueberries are full of fiber, folate, and vitamin C, which is way better for you than sugar, water, and food coloring!
- Baked Apple Cinnamon Crisps. Did you know that a potato chip craving is often just a craving for a “crunch”? Satisfy your mouth’s desire for a crunchy snack with antioxidant-filled baked apple chips instead. Sally has a great recipe, once again.
- Dark chocolate energy trail bites are another great way to satisfy your chocolate craving. A dolop of chocolate some dried fruit, and nuts give you a protein and antioxidant “sweet” that you can eat in one bite. Check out Simply Tarralynn for the recipe.
